A “Special” Division That Offers Operational Support

It is better known as ISD, of the Royal Bahamas Police Force. But what do you really know about this specialized unit? Our Jasmin Brown recently toured their University Drive compound, where she spoke with the commanding officer about the units that make up the unit. Supt. Devaughn McCartney – Commander-in-Charge, Internal Security Division “ISD is home to the K-9 section as well as the SWAT and Police Armoury Section. So our mandate is operational support and parades and ceremonies.” ISD covers a wide range of policing divisions from tactical crime fighting to ceremonial appearances. No one knows that better than Commander-in-Charge, Superintendant Devaughn McCartney. Mccartney told us that they’re two highly sought after unit, but it’s the canine unit’s diversity that edges them out as the most popular among their fellow officers. Supt. Devaughn McCartney – Commander-in-Charge, Internal Security Division “It is a very special division. The canine section is the most requested section within the Royal Bahamas Police Force. We have a tracking dog, an attack dog, a firearm detection dog, a bomb dog, and so that the reason why they’re the most requested dog within the force.” Not to be outdone is the SWAT unit , which is their tactical expertise and they are also in high demand. SWAT is called upon to support other divisions in high-risk and dangerous cases that need extra muscle. Supt. Devaughn McCartney – Commander-in-Charge, Internal Security Division “If you have somebody that is wanted like a high prolific offender the SWAT element, the tactical element, they are skilled and trained to enter houses, bushes and to ensure the safety of people within the community. However, ISD isn’t just about fighting crime, it’s also the home of the parade’s unit. Supt. Devaughn McCartney – Commander-in-Charge, Internal Security Division “Outside of the tactical element and the canine we are responsible for all national parades in The Bahamas and there are about 3 to four staple events, such as the police church service, opening of the legal year, the police church service and of course the opening of the legal year, but the biggest parade is our celebration of independence. And trust me you don’t want to miss it.”
