BRAZIL – Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula Da Silva is speaking out in defense of Cuba, saying the island’s humanitarian struggles are being made worse by U.S. policy. Lula said Wednesday that Cubans are going hungry. because, in his words, they are being denied access to basic goods. The Brazilian leader made the comments while criticizing actions by the United sSates government against the communist-run island. Cuba has long blamed U.S. sanctions and economic restrictions for its deepening economic crisis, which has been marked by shortages of food, fuel and medicine. Washington, however, maintains that its policies target the Cuban government and not the island’s people.
