The Provost Marshal made the declaration on the steps of Parliament on Friday. Shanta Knowles – Provost Marshal “I, Dame Cynthia A. Pratt, Governor-General of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas, acting in accordance with the advice of the Prime Minister, do hereby prorogue Parliament from Friday, the 27th day of March, 2026. Given under my hand and the Public Seal of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas at Government House in the City of Nassau, this 27th day of March in the Year of Our Lord, 2026, and in the fourth year of His Majesty’s reign.” Commissioner of Police Shanta Knowles, acted in her capacity as Provost Marshal on Friday and read a proclamation from Governor-General Dame Cynthia Pratt on the steps of the House of Assembly, proroguing Parliament. Proroguing Parliament means the legislative session has come to an end. But what exactly does that mean? In a televised address hours before Parliament was prorogued, Prime Minister Philip Davis, explained this. Philip Davis – Prime Minister “Proroguing Parliament means the legislative session has come to an end. Proroguing is a routine step in our constitutional system – but it is not the same as dissolving Parliament. When Parliament is dissolved, the law requires that registration of voters ends, and we move to a general election. I haven’t advised the dissolution of Parliament yet” The last time the house was prorogued, was back in 2023, after Davis shuffled his cabinet. House will meet again on April 8th. Further fueling speculation, the bell could be rung right after the holidays, something that Progressive Liberal Party Chairman, Fred Mitchell, said while only the P.M knows, might be a clue. Fred Mitchell – Chairman, Progressive Liberal Party “So when you hear the 8th of April, it is telling you something I’m saying just pay attention to the numbers it’s telling you something” For leader of government business in the House of Assembly, Adrian White, the race is officially on. Adrian White – Leader of Govt. Business, House of Assembly “I think the nation’s ready I wanted to be here to be present so that I wouldn’t miss the opportunity in the occasion. I’m an opposition now and I’m expecting that with support of the people the FNM will be in government in next term.”
