Former Prime Minister and current MP, Dr. Hubert Minnis still has not lost the seat since being elected nearly 20 years ago, under the free national movement. This time around he’ll be running as an independent. One of his political challengers is FNM Killarney candidate, Senator Michela Barnett-Ellis said she’s disappointed that the former prime minister decided to seek re-election. Our Joshua Williams explained why in this report Election season is in full swing, and the Killarney constituency is one of the most watched races. Battling to become the next Killarney MP is the former Prime Minister Dr. Hubert Minnis, FNM Candidate Michela Barnett-Ellis, Progressive Liberal Party Candidate Robyn Lynes, and the Coalition of Independents candidate Dr. Veronica McIver. We caught up with the FNM’s candidate at an energy forum on Thursday. Barnett-Ellis said she’s ready for the challenge, even if one of her opponents is the former prime minister. Dr. Minnis, holding that seat since 2007 promised “Keep Killarney Strong”, will run as an independent after he wasn’t ratified by the party he once led for a decade. Barnett-Ellis said she wished he didn’t contest as an independent. Michela Barnett-Ellis – FNM Candidate, Killarney “According to our constitution, when you do run as an independent it sparks a process that removes you from being a FNM and being a member of the party. That would be extremely unfortunate because he was our leader; he was the former prime minister, and there’s the legacy part of that. To be removed from the future of the FNM because you became an independent I think it is extremely unfortunate. I’ve seen it is happen to others and I think that he deserves to stay on the books.” When it comes to Lynes and Dr. Mciver, she said the more, the merrier.
